Dr. Garcia-Murillo's research focuses on the impact of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on society. Within this area she has worked on four interrelated research streams:

• Infrastructure and access
• Technology and new business, informal work
• Technology and governance and how ICT innovation can reduce corruption or make processes more effective
• Technology and its impact on work and inequalities

In these areas, she has pursued questions critical to the field. At the time of telecommunications market liberalization she conducted research about how unbundling affected broadband deployment. When populations in Latin America eagerly embraced wireless technology she tried to determine how the region was going to improve bandwidth in spite of its limited wired infrastructure. Given rapid developments in networked information technology, she wanted to find out the impact that ICTs have had on society. She found, for example, that ICTs can help reduce instances of corruption as long as there are also strong efforts on civic and government enforcement.  Her current research focuses on the impact of technology on employment. 

Her writing has also been characterized by innovative methodological approaches, an effort that relates to her interest in the process of research and theory development.
